Concentrations

The M.S. in Kinesiology is a program requiring students to complete a minimum of 36 hours over a two-year period. All students complete core Kinesiology coursework and select one of the three concentration options:

Research

  • The Research concentration includes a required thesis project, and elective coursework chosen to fit each student's career goals, consisting of advanced study in areas such as biomechanics, specific topics in exercise physiology, or related interdisciplinary coursework (biology, chemisty, physics) for those who plan to pursue a Ph.D.
  • Program Requirements

 Clinical Exercise Physiology

  • The Clinical Exercise Physiology concentration includes coursework and experiences in cardiorespiratory physiology, cardiopulmonary pathophysiology, exercise prescription, and chronic disease management in preparation for a career in the clinical, wellness, or rehabilitative setting.

The goal of concentration in Clinical Exercise Physiology is to prepare competent Clinical Exercise Physiology professionals in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The attainment of the overall goal is determined by the degree to which the following individual program goals are met:

  • Program Goal 1: Students will apply knowledge of disease pathophysiology, treatment, and patient behavior change and care.
  • Program Goal 2: Students will develop skills in the areas of screening and risk stratification, exercise prescription, patient care, and behavior modification that are necessary for entering the workforce.
  • Program Requirements

Strength and Conditioning

  • The Strength and Conditioning concentration includes coursework and experiences in program design, sport performance, high-performance testing, sport nutrition, sport psychology, and motor behavior in preparation for a career athletic performance, sport science, or fitness. Students are encouraged to obtain one of the certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) when nearing completion of the program. A list of student learning outcomes and the associated courses can be found here.

The Appalachian State University Master of Science in Kinesiology-Strength and Conditioning Program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education (CASCE), a recognized authority in quality strength and conditioning education. This accreditation demonstrates our commitment to upholding the highest standards of quality and excellence in our strength and conditioning program. Our curriculum, faculty, and facilities have undergone rigorous evaluation to ensure that we provide students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to excel in the field of strength and conditioning and keep athletes safe.

Graduate students have the opportunity to assist in ongoing research in faculty research laboratories. Additionally, students are encouraged to engage in research that culminates in a professional presentation or publication. An internship is required for both the Clinical Exercise Physiology and Strength & Conditioning concentrations.
