Frequently Asked Questions | CHFA

Where is the Exercise Physiology Lab (Community Health and Fitness Program) located?

Our lab is located in the Leon Levine College of Health Sciences building directly across from Watauga Medical Center. Our physical address is 1179 State Farm Rd, Boone, NC 28608. Parking is available for participants in the back of the building, one of our team members will give you a parking permit the day of the test.

What is an Informed Consent, and why do I need one?

The informed consent for community testing explains the test protocols, the risks and benefits associated with testing, and the safety precautions. You will be asked to read this document, ask any questions and sign it to access the program.

Our program is linked to a research project that investigates health and fitness of the people living in our community. You can sign the consent to participate in research at the end of the test session to allow our laboratory to use your test results anonymously for research purposes. Participation in research studies is voluntary, and not required for participation in the Community Health and Fitness Program.

What is a Medical History Form, and why do I need to fill one out?

The medical history form is vital as it helps the laboratory team understand your current health to ensure your safety throughout the entire session.

You will be asked to complete the physical activity readiness questionnaire and answer questions regarding your current and past health history including diseases, injuries, chronic conditions and medications you may be taking. All information will be treated as confidential.

How do I Schedule an Appointment?

You can schedule an appointment by using our Google calendar.

You will receive a reminder from eshpl@appstate.edu the day before the test. Please be thoughtful and inform us if you decide to cancel or reschedule your appointment.

How much does testing cost?

The cost for the Complete Fitness Assessments (body composition + gait and balance + arterial health + resting metabolic rate + aerobic fitness -VO2max-) is $100 for community members and $60 for App State students.

Optional tests are provided upon request. The cost of the optional tests are as follows: Electrocardiogram ECG $10; Blood lactate during exercise $30; Blood analysis (hematocrit, glucose, LDL, HDL, triglycerides) $20; Hydration $5.

The goal of this program is to serve our community, so we also accept donations in any amount. Please contact eshpl@appstate.edu for more information on how you can donate.

What does a typical testing session look like?

One of our team members will meet you in the lobby area of the Leon Levine building. We will check you in and guide you to the laboratory. Before the test starts you will receive a tour of the laboratory, you will meet our team and we will answer any of your questions. Measurements of height and weight are taken first, followed by the gait and balance test, a body composition test, RMR test, arterial stiffness, and finally the exercise test. Once all tests are completed and you have had adequate time to rest and recover, a lab technician will sit down with you to give you a brief overview of your results. Note that we do not provide interpretation of the results, diagnoses or prescriptions. Digital copies of your results will be shared with you through a protected email system in the next couple of days.

Are there any requirements for testing?

At this point in time, we are only able to test healthy individuals with no pre-existing conditions. Specific conditions which may prevent you from participating in a particular test can be found on the webpages for each test on this website. On the day of testing, be sure to arrive in clothing you would be comfortable exercising in, hydrated (drink a 12-16 ounces glass of water) and rested (light or no exercise the day before the test). To obtain reliable results from the test, do not consume any stimulants (caffeine, nicotine, etc...) or eat a large meal not earlier than 4 hours before the tests.

Who will be running my tests?

Our tests are run by trained laboratory technicians and students from Appalachian State University. Our laboratory staff have received their CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, and have been rigorously trained to ensure that you are comfortable and safe enough to maximize your results.

What do my results mean?

The results of the tests will provide information about your health and fitness that healthcare professionals and coaches can use to help you achieve your health and fitness goals. You can also use these results to track changes in your health and fitness over time. We are working on becoming more connected with qualified professionals in the Boone area who are capable of helping you achieve your goals.

What will happen to my results after I finish testing?

We are strong believers in confidentiality, and take security very seriously. All results are kept in a secure database with no identifiable information, meaning that it would be impossible to trace your results back to you. We will share with you the results of your tests and, with your approval, with a person of your choice.

Feel free to contact us if you have any other concerns about your data, results, or other information.
